Dr. Deborah Ashton

Chief Psychologist, Head of the Behavioral & Research Practice DMBA

Dr. Deborah Ashton, Chief Psychologist for Diversity MBA, has over 25 years of cross-industry experience in human resources and D&I, including healthcare and global Fortune 500 experience. Dr. Ashton earned her B.A. in psychology from Clarke College, and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University. At Harvard, she studied with Dr. Chester ‘Chet’ Pierce, who coined the term “microaggression”. Dr. Ashton completed a postdoctoral internship at Harvard Medical School. She is a licensed clinical psychologist, in three states. Dr. Ashton specializes in organizational psychology, developing an inclusive workplace and mitigating implicit bias.

Dr. Ashton created the 360o Inclusion Leadership Profile TM (360o ILP) and the Inclusive Culture Inventory (ICI). The 360o ILP assesses individual and organizational strengths and developmental needs for leading an inclusive and multicultural workforce and for success in a dynamic and diverse market. The 360o ILP provides action plans to assist with individual development plans, executive coaching, workshops and training, The ICI measures the inclusiveness of an organization’s environment and provides guidance to increase inclusion.

Dr. Ashton’s 2018 Diversity MBA article (Sexual Harassment! Echoing Resolve the Problems Before They Begin!) focuses on creating an inclusive, harassment free corporate culture. The Harvard Business Review, the Financial Times, International Labor Organization, various media and professional organizations recognize Dr. Ashton as a diversity and inclusion thought leader. Savoy Magazine named her as one of 2014 Top Influential Women in Corporate America. Dr. Ashton has published in the Harvard Business Review, Diversity MBA, Diversity Executive, Equity of Care-AHA, Institute for Diversity in Health Management-AHA, etc. Her Harvard Business Review articles are Does Race or Gender Matter More to Your Paycheck? and What HR Can Do to Fix the Gender Pay Gap. Dr. Ashton’s AHA articles addressed how to leverage diversity and inclusion to advance health equity, improve quality and eliminate healthcare disparities. She has presented at international conferences from Mexico to Australia.

Dr. Ashton was the head of diversity and inclusion for Medtronic, Darden Restaurants, Harley-Davidson, Novant Health and Argonne National Laboratory. She has a certificate in diversity management from Georgetown University & the Institute for Diversity – American Hospital Association and is certified in LaMarsh Master of Managed Change™. Dr. Ashton provides guidance and coaching on how to mitigate unconscious bias in the workplace and in talent management.

Dr. Charlotte Ashton

Principal Strategist, Race, Religion & Culture

Dr. Charlotte Ashton received her doctorate and master’s degrees from Princeton University in Modern American Cultural History. She has taught history and cinema as a university professor to both urban and rural students across the United States. She taught American cultural history at the San Francisco Art Institute. At Morgan State University, one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, she taught American film history and U.S. history.

Dr. Charlotte Ashton is an expert interviewer. For her Ph.D. dissertation, The Changing Images of Blacks in American Film, 1944-1973, she interviewed noted filmmakers, such as, directors Sidney Pollack and Robert Wise, screenwriters James Poe and Lonnie Elder and actor Danny Glover. Her dissertation is recommended reading for faculty and students at Yale University and appears on the film studies reading lists at the University of Southern California, School of Cinema and Television and the University of California, Berkeley. As the former film critic for the public radio station WEAA-Baltimore, Dr. Ashton interviewed filmmakers and directors.
